JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

INTRO: Our thrust is to see and know "The Story of Jesus." This is the middle chapter. Last week we noted that Jesus had formerly existed in “the form of God” which means he was spirit, and he would later say, “God is spirit…” The second thing that showed up in that chapter in Philippians was that “He had equality with God.” This led us to believe that Jesus is a being without beginning and end. He is eternal. When the beginning was, Jesus was already there, but not known by that given name. When we speak of Jesus Christ we need to know His life did NOT begin in Bethlehem…

I) THE NEW TESTAMENT IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, so we go there to gain insight,
A) Jesus said, “do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.”-Matt. 5:17(*2)
B) Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life  John 5:39,40.(*3) Cf. vs 46,47
C) Jesus said, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” Then
beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning
Himself in all the Scriptures. Luke 24:25-27(*4)
D) Jesus said, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be
fulfilled.” Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them,
“Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.”-Luke 24:44-47 (*5) and (*6)
II) IN THE OLD TESTAMENT JESUS WAS WELL KNOWN
A) As The Seed Of Woman
1) It is normal to speak of the “seed line” from Abraham through his descendants.(*7)
2) But we must start earlier: Genesis 3:15- To the serpent God said, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
3) This is very strange language. It is the ONLY time that “seed” or “offspring” is said to be of the female. It is ALWAYS from the male.
4) Who is this? Simply her descendants or is Jesus directly involved?
(a) Galatians 3:13,14-Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A]TREE”— in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
(b) Galatians 3:8,16-Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but rather to one, “And to your seed,” that is, Christ.
(c) Galatians 4:4- “When the fullness of time came, God sent forth His Son, born of
woman, born under the law.”
(d) Although Abraham lived 2000 years earlier, Jesus was the “Seed” of Genesis 3 and the
promised reward for Abraham!
(e) Now see Galatians 3:26-29
5) The image comes from the highly-trained stone masons who carefully chose the best stone to be used in the corner of the foundation. No stone was as important as this one.
6) Jesus is being called the corner stone. See more application-Matt.21:41-46
7) Now listen to Peter speaking as a result of the crowd’s reaction- Acts 4:1-12

CONCLUSION: This is a shorter than usual lesson so that we could read rather extensively each
passage so that we ALL will grasp the context. 330 accurate prophecies can be found in the Old Testament pointing to some aspect of the life of Jesus. We are correct to speak of Jesus as the “center and circumference” of our faith.
There were 40 other people who claimed to be the Messiah/Christ. However, not one could appeal to the Scriptures as did Jesus and His followers. This is summed up in two verses: “Jesus died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, and he was buried and that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. (I Corinthians 15:3,4)
